• Upper Back pain is a dead on indication that your mattress is too soft - If your upper back is giving you grief, then it is almost certain that your bed is too soft for you and needs to be replaced. 
• A firmer mattress has a few caveats - A firmer mattress does provide better support for your spine, especially your lower back, but if you are a side sleeper, it will also put more pressure on your shoulders and hips when you are lying down.
