Introducing Stearns & Foster

Oddly, it is a bit tough to find out the early history of Stearns & Foster. Thankfully, here at Bedplanet we make it easy to fill all of your Stearns & Foster needs. That even includes finding out about the company themselves. Now, you won’t have to hunt around the internet for details because we already did it for you.

Sterns & Foster were founded in 1846 by G.S. Sterns and Seth Foster. Initially the company was located in Cincinnati, Ohio and was involved in manufacturing upholstery for horse drawn carriages. Seth Foster involved the company in the development of mattresses using George Stearns newly invented process for cotton bunting. Eventually the company became well known in the US for manufacturing quality mattresses that were sold through high-end retailers.

In the early 1900’s Stearns & Foster brought in artists and stylists to help with the design of the mattresses. This “out of the box” thinking proved successful and increased the company’s reputation greatly. In 1993 the Stearns & Foster Company was bought by Sealy. They are presently Sealy’s luxury brand of mattress.

In 2000 they partnered with Joma Wool in New Zealand to use New Zealand wool as a natural insulator. In 2009 the patented IntelliCoil was established followed by the Indulge Quilt in 2012. Climate control and tufting showed up in 2014 and the Reserve collection burst on the scene in 2016 featuring a redesigned innerspring system.

Leggett & Platt has redesigned the legs on some of its adjustable base models with more to come. Formerly the legs usually consisted of casters that you find on most beds. They have now been replaced with telescoping legs that have multiple benefits.

Which Is Better? OsakiOs-4000 Vs Ogawa Refresh?

The Ogawa Refresh massage chair and OS-4000 massage chair are both going to give you a quality massage. They are also both packed with features. When putting the two chairs side-by-side one just seems to be a little bit better than the other, feature wise.

This first thing most people would normally be concerned about is which chair will give me a better massage? They both utilize the S-track technology, the system that follows the curve of your spine to focus on your trouble areas. Ease Adjustable Base BySealy Versus Falcon Adjustable Base By Leggett & Platt

When comparing adjustable bases Leggett & Platt’s Falcon and the Sealy Ease go toe-to-toe pretty easily. Upon first inspection there are a few subtle differences. Leggett & Platt is missing the retention bar thanks to their new MicroHook retention system. This makes the bar of the Sealy Ease stand out a lot more. Leggett & Platt include a bar, but using it is optional.

The second observation most likely is going to be size. The Sealy Ease has a 4” platform, which will make it a bit more visible when it is put in a bed frame. Leggett & Platt’s Falcon has a compressed frame that has been pushed down to 2”. This will be visible but it is almost out of sight when paired with a bed frame. If visibility is a concern Leggett & Platt would get the points over the Sealy Ease.

Both come with wireless remotes that include multiple features. The Ease pulls ahead on this one by including a one touch flat option. This will make getting the bed back to a standard position, not necessarily quick, but easier. Sealy’s Ease also has the option of including a 9-volt battery, at an extra cost. Paired with the one touch flat option, getting the bed flat during a power outage would be possible. Leggett & Platt do not have either one of these features which gives Sealy’s East the advantage here.

Leggett & Platt fight back with the weight limit. Their limit goes all the way up to 800lbs where the Ease taps out at 650lbs. That is a significant difference when you consider the idea of kids jumping into the bed too. Leggett & Platt have also made their newest frame 30lbs lighter than the typical adjustable base.

Finally, we look at the paperwork. The warranties are quite comparable, so it would come down to what you personally would feel is more important. Sealy has better coverage on the parts, while Leggett & Platt have better coverage on the frame. Both have long warranties that are going to cover the bases for many years. Both are designed, engineered and assembled in America. At the moment the Ease is slightly cheaper in overall price.

As with most things, at the end of the day it is going to come down to personal preference and what your needs really are. If you are concerned about weight limit, then the Falcon is going to be a clear winner. If you want as many features as you can get, the Ease might be the way to go, but only slightly.

The best part of these two adjustable bases is that Sealy and Leggett & Platt are both offering adjustable bed bases with some high-end features at a price many people will be able to afford.

Leggett & Platt Didn’t Just Raise The Bar, They Made It Disappear!

There is one thing that tends to stand out when you start looking for an adjustable bed base. That is the big, bold retainer bar. The purpose of the bar is pretty simple, to keep the mattress in place when the bed is on the move. Easy enough and makes a lot of sense. Once a blanket is on the bed the bar goes out of sight and essentially out of mind. Until it’s time to change the sheets, then the bar gives you a stiff reminder that it is still around.

Leggett & Platt wanted to streamline the adjustable base system and one thing that had to go was the retainer bar, otherwise known as the hospital bar. In order to do this they had to figure out how to keep the mattress in place while the bed was being adjusted. They came up with a unique design that is proprietary to Leggett & Platt. They call it the MicroHook retention system.

The MicroHook system consists of two strips that run across the width of the base. The strips are made out of a velcro like material that grabs onto the mattress and keeps it in place while the base is in motion. MicroHook will work with any mattress without anything additional required. Once the mattress is placed on the base the MicroHook system will attach itself and keep the mattress in the same spot.

MicroHook first appeared on the Leggett & Platt Prodigy 2.0 Adjustable Base that arrived in early 2016. The Prodigy 2.0 is packed with additional features that complement the update to the Prodigy line. But Leggett & Platt feel that everyone should get a chance to experience the MicroHook system and have included it on the lower priced Falcon adjustable base as well.

Leggett & Platt understand that for some people change can be hard. The retainer bar has been on adjustable based beds for a long time. Some people like to decorate their bed frame with a dust ruffle. A dust ruffle will cover up the MicroHook system causing it to not be effective and making a retainer bar necessary. One could assume that in order to bring the retainer bar back there would be an additional fee. Leggett & Platt will include the retainer bar with their adjustable bases. This way they are making the choice yours, not telling you what you have to do.

Removing the retainer bar was just the first of many innovations that Leggett & Platt are bringing to their adjustable bases. They listen to the consumer and their new adjustable bases are a prime example of keeping what the consumer wants in mind.
