Oddly, it is a bit tough to find out the early history of Stearns & Foster. Thankfully, here at Bedplanet we make it easy to fill all of your Stearns & Foster needs. Sterns & Foster were founded in 1846 by G.S. Sterns and Seth Foster. Initially the company was located in Cincinnati, Ohio and was involved in manufacturing upholstery for horse drawn carriages. Seth Foster involved the company in the development of mattresses using George Stearns newly invented process for cotton bunting. Eventually the company became well known in the US for manufacturing quality mattresses that were sold through high-end retailers.
In the early 1900’s Stearns & Foster brought in artists and stylists to help with the design of the mattresses. This “out of the box” thinking proved successful and increased the company’s reputation greatly. In 1993 the Stearns & Foster Company was bought by Sealy. They are presently Sealy’s luxury brand of mattress.
In 2000 they partnered with Joma Wool in New Zealand to use New Zealand wool as a natural insulator. In 2009 the patented IntelliCoil was established followed by the Indulge Quilt in 2012. Climate control and tufting showed up in 2014 and the Reserve collection burst on the scene in 2016 featuring a redesigned innerspring system.
